Before you finalize your reservation at your chosen hotel or luxury resort in Phuket, it is better to know the upcoming festivals in this Thailand province. These events are not only fun, but they also focus on different interests that travelers can enjoy.
1. Songkran Festival
On April 13-15, locals will celebrate their Thai New Year. They will spend the days visiting temples, sprinkling water on the Buddha images, and sprinkling on each other for good luck. Over the years, younger locals use this practice as an excuse to have water fights, so do not be surprised if somebody splashes a bucket of water on you. They mean well and are just having a good time.
2. Phuket Bike Week
If you're a biking enthusiast, plan your visit around April 14-21 so you can participate in Phuket's annual motorcycle week. You will see amazing collections of Harleys, Hondas, and other custom-made bikes boasting of different designs and upgrades. Concerts, parties, and charity rides around the island are just some of the activities you can expect during the festival.
3. Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Race Week
Some Phuket accommodations also sponsor events. Such is the case for the Cape Panwa Hotel's Phuket Race Week. If you are one of those who enjoy yacht racing, then the third week of July is when you should come to Phuket. You can watch and even compete in 4 whole days of international-standard races. After riding, reward yourself with a rejuvenating massage at any Phuket spa in the area.
4. Kathu Festival
Held every August, this street culture festival is held at Kathu Market and features colorful stalls, live music, and exhibitions. If you are looking to shop, this is the perfect time to get the latest and vintage items such as clothing, toys, and even artwork. There are also stalls here that sell affordable and tasty street food.
5. Loy Khratong Festival
If you are into photography or just somebody who has a penchant for the whimsical, take your trip around November to witness Phuket's festival of lights. During these times, many make and sell khratongs or flower covered mini-floats, complete with candles and incense sticks often resembling lotus flowers. These things are then lit and sent to sea or any body of water. Locals believe that if your khratong float away, the coming year will bring good fortune. But if it floats back towards the shore, then perhaps your luck may not be quite as you had wished. Nevertheless, this is one event that you shouldn't miss.
6. Laguna Phuket Triathlon 2013
Athletes and fitness buffs must take note of the 24th of November in Phuket. The island's biggest triathlon is held on this particular day and has been going on for almost 2 decades. This event comprises of swimming, biking, and running. If you are planning to participate, book that luxury months ahead to avoid any hassle.
